Removing cigarette odor?

Post by FrenchToast » Thu Jan 05, 2017 12:52 am

Hi all,

No offense to those that smoke!

I've done some searching, and via regular homecare sites and other scale model sites it seems that vinegar is a good solution (pun intended) to remove cigarette odor.

From what I read, placing the model in a bin along with a vinegar soaked rag could remove much of the odor? UV exposure helping the process when possible.

As may be obvious, it generally only affects the carpeting. However in some bad cases other porous materials like plastics and rubber are affected.

I put a model in a box on top of some drier sheets, left it until I rediscovered it (five years later) and the smell is mostly gone. But that is a long time!

Wonder if anyone has come up with a better method?

Just yesterday I ended my saga on this very issue.
Got a couple of 1/18 diecast from eBay.
Arrived reeking of chemical smell..realised later was a long exposure tobacco smoke.
Placed both in a closed bin with charcoal for near a year with little result.
2 days ago I decided to emersed both in same bin on a towel to limit movement with just water.
2 days later I removed, drained and left to dry naturally and no smell at all.
There were no water slides or decals that were going to let go..extreme way of doing it but worked..just need detailing on removing rest of dust.
Polystyrene clamshells just a rinse needed.

I never tried it, but I thought the above was the method of choice.
