What is this thing

I have a 1/18 model of a 1964 Corvette Grand Sport roadster. On the doors is a chrome object just below the door handles. I have seen thin on die case models and in photos of the real car. Not all photos have this item, but it seems most of the Grand Sport competition cars do. What in the world is this thing? I have searched everywhere on the web and no joy. It looks like it could be a vent or such, but why on a roadster, where you head is kin the wind.

Thanks for your help.

Just go on Ebay and look at any of the Road Legends 1964 Grand Sports and you'll know what I mean. Getting a photo online is somewhat of a hassle for me. Thanks for you quick reply. This thing is really bugging me to find out what it is. :(

It's a light to illuminate the number roundel on the door, for endurance racing at night to identify the car as it drives by the pits at speed.

Thank you guys, Thank you guys. THANK YOU GUYS!! I would have never guessed what that was but it makes perfect sense, especially why it's only on some of the cars. I appreciate your help very much. Have a great weekend all.
