1) What first got you collecting diecast? How long have you been collecting? What is your total model count as of today?

Ever since I can remember, I’ve always been into cars. My dad and grandfather really got me and my brother into all things automotive. I’ve probably been collecting for 20 years now. Since the start, my collection has gone through many phases. Trying to collect as much as I can, now collecting models of vehicles that have some significance to me. Currently have approximately 18-20 1:18 scale models.

2) What was your first diecast or memory?

I can recall my first diecast being a yellow Lamborghini Diablo when I was maybe 8 years old. That was really the moment I loved the detail of something bigger other than a Hot Wheels. I played with it so much that the wheels and the doors fell off.

3) What is your favourite scale, and why?

I’ve always been a 1:18th scale fan. I think it’s not too big and not too small. A great amount of detail for a reasonable price as well. I think if I collected 1:43, I’d have more in the collection, but I feel like it would be very easy for it to get out of control. Space also plays a role now since I don’t have an abundance of space to display.

4) What are some of your favourite models to date? Did you share any photos with us?

My favourite models are the Kyosho gold Miura, the Makeup White Singer DLS, the Kyosho brown R8 and the AutoArt silver Carerra GT. All of these are in my collection.

5) Is there a model that has eluded you, a holy grail of sorts?

For a long time, the Miura was my holy grail. Took me nearly 3 years to find one. Got lucky a few years ago and didn’t want to waste the chance. Another one I’m on the hunt for at the moment is the AUTOart Murcielago LP640.

6) What is your favourite brand/manufacturer, and why?

I’m a big fan of Kyosho and AutoArt. I tend to lean more towards their older models, as the quality was slightly better with full opening parts. I also really like the variety of cars that GTSpirit is producing at a lower and reasonable price point.

7) Describe your current theme and what your overall goal is?

I wouldn’t say I have a theme, just merely cars that speak to me for one reason or another. Whether it be vehicle design, a car I want to own one day. If I can find a car that meets the above, finding one in a unique specification is a bonus.

8) Do you display your collection? If yes, how?

I display them in my home office in acrylic cases. Allows me to see them and try to gain some inspiration throughout the day.

9) Do you have any other hobbies, passions or addictions?

I also have a sneaker collection habit. It causes my decisions to go with either a new pair of shoes or a new diecast. I’m afraid to admit that I have nearly double the amount of sneakers as I have models.

10) What do you think about the diecast hobby as it stands today?

I think it’s growing well, and great to see the addition of some new manufacturers using new technologies is exciting. I was really not a fan of resin models at the start, but in the end, it will still showcase the vehicles in nearly the same way. Prices also fluctuate, which can be a bit frustrating, but that’s how it works.

11) If you could change one thing about the diecast hobby what would that be?

I see a lot of manufacturers creating the same car in 10+ colours, and it would be nice to see a bit more fresh vehicles being produced by the big players. I know licensing plays a big role, but it would be nice to see more middle-of-the-road modern cars like we used to.

12) Do you modify cars? If yes, what are some examples?

No, I don’t. The only vehicle that is modified is my 992 GT3 touring, where I had the wheels painted to silver from someone customizing out of Germany. I like the look of the standard models, but have always been open to modifying.

13) What does your spouse, partner or significant other think of your hobby and your collection?

My wife is very supportive of my hobbies and doesn’t have an issue with my collection as long as it doesn’t get out of hand or outside of my office. I have a full carte blanche in my space, which is always nice. I hope to someday pass the collection down to my future son, joining our family in 2025.

14) What is your daily driver?

I drive a 2023 Audi A4 allroad.

Thank you Steven. Curating what I like and what I want to display is the hardest part. Never have enough space for everything I want.
