1) What first got you collecting diecast? How long have you been collecting? What is your total model count as of today?
I have been interested in cars from a young age. So model cars were always around. First, the 3-inch models (Siku, Matchbox, Hot Wheels etc). Later on 1:24, scale models from Bburago and Maisto were introduced. When I got my first 1:18 model, I was hooked for life. That was a black Dodge Viper R/T 10 from Bburago. Still have it to this day. Now, I collect 1:18 and 1:64 models, preferably the same model in both scales, if they are available. In total, I have collected for over 35 years, but got more serious over the last 25 years or so. I have over 420 1:18 models and over 880 1:64 models. Besides that, I also have a vast collection of dioramas, accessories and figures in both scales (over 500 items).
2) What was your first diecast or memory?
I can’t remember my first 3-inch, but the first 1:18 that started the collection I have today is a black Dodge Viper R/T 10 from Bburago.
3) What is your favourite scale, and why?
1:18 and 1:64 have plenty to get in a wide variety and loads of detail, especially in the 1:18 department.
4) What are some of your favourite models to date? Did you share any photos with us?
I have a thing for modified cars, so a large part of the collection consists of RWB, LBWK, Hot Rods, Muscle cars (restomods) and other modified brands/cars. Two other models that are also very special to me are the AUTOart 787B LeMans winner and the Nissan Skyline RS Turbo DR30 Super Silhouette (Hasemi Motorsport 1982 Japan). For pictures, see attachments or have a look at my Instagram account: www.instagram.com/1864.modelcars/
5) Is there a model that has eluded you, a holy grail of sorts?
There is so much available these days that there is always a new must-have (for me), but the 787B I searched for the longest to get my hands on, so happy that I have that already in the collection.
6) What is your favourite brand/manufacturer, and why?
I don’t have one specific brand, every manufacturer has their pros and cons. I collect the models that I like, be it diecast or resin.
7) Describe your current theme and what your overall goal is?
I have always collected the models I liked: racing, street, and modified. Not a main theme, a goal. But I think the modified ones are the majority of the collection.
8) Do you display your collection? If yes, how?
Yes, almost all the cars are on display. Billy cabinets with doors or open.
9) Do you have any other hobbies, passions or addictions?
Not too much; I’m watching F1 and tinkering with my dioramas.
10) What do you think about the diecast hobby as it stands today?
I think it’s great. The (online) community is very nice. I have met some great people through this hobby!
11) If you could change one thing about the diecast hobby what would that be?
I would love to see the prices go down again. The rate at which prices go up makes collecting almost impossible for some. Also, the 2nd hand market isn’t affordable anymore in some cases. All these high-end models are great to see with all the opening parts, but spending €300-400 on models isn’t for everyone.
12) Do you modify cars? If yes, what are some examples?
Some mild mods, like changing a wheel. Would love to do more, but my lack of skill is holding me back.
13) What does your spouse, partner or significant other think of your hobby and your collection?
She thinks it’s a nice hobby, the kids also love to watch the models too.
14) What is your daily driver?
A very sensible Toyota Avensis wagon.
