About the Shelby GT350R Prototype… “This car was Shelby’s competition prototype, designed to transform the Mustang’s image from a pedestrian, mass-market car to a race-bred marque. It was a rolling factory test bed for new ideas, components, and bits that would eventually be fitted to the 34 customer GT350Rs.
The object of the GT350 program was to beat the Corvettes in SCCA racing. Shelby had to first get a car the SCCA would accept as a sports car. Shelby came armed with a lengthy list of modifications in mind, all of which were intended to make the GT350R into a formidable race car and turn a gentle little colt into a roaring, snorting stallion. Working to make this a reality was an amazing team including Ken Miles, Chuck Cantwell, Bob Bondurant, Peter Brock, and Jerry Titus who all put in serious time behind the wheel.”
