About the Volkswagen Beetle… “In the 1930s, a certain Ferdinand Porsche was commissioned by the Führer to design and conceptualize the “people’s car” (Volkswagen in German). The German brand was founded in 1937, and the historic Wolfsburg plant opened in 1938 to produce the first model, a small city car named the KdF-Wagen. World War II broke out, and the project was set aside in favor of military vehicles. A few KdF-Wagens left the factories, but their assembly lines and parts were mainly used to produce the “German Jeeps,” the Kübelwagen and the Schwimmwagen (an amphibious model). In 1945, workers produced a few models of the future Beetle in the ruins of the factory. The Volkswagen Type 1—its official name—was officially launched in late 1945. Success came very quickly! Within six months, 1,000 Type 1s were produced, and within a year, ten thousand units were built. In 1949, production was no longer exclusive to the British military authorities, and the Type 1 took off toward global success. It would be produced until 2003 in Mexico, with over 21 million units built throughout its career. It became a true star, to the point of being the central character in a series of Disney films between 1968 and 2005. Known today as the “Beetle,” “Coccinelle,” “Vocho,” or Käfer in its home country, it has become the most famous and beloved car in the world! In nearly a century, it has managed to cross generations while continuing to charm and delight.”
