About the Chrysler Norseman… “The story of the Chrysler Norseman is linked with one of the biggest naval accidents of the 20th Century. On July, 25, 1956, just before reaching her destination New York harbor, Italy´s biggest and most luxurious Ocean Liner, SS Andrea Doria, was traveling in foggy weather off the coast of Massachusetts when she was rammed by Swedish liner MS Stockholm that had just left New York in opposite direction. MS Stockholm´s radar officer had misjudged the distance between the two ships and SS Andrea Doria had tried to avoid the other ship but steered into its way instead, so that the bow of MS Stockholm hit Andrea Doria midships, causing a massive leak in its hull. Even though Andrea Doria had been deemed unsinkable, she only kept afloat for ten more hours before she finally sank. Fortunately MS Stockholm was still stable at sea despite her smashed bow and, together with other ships that had rushed to the site, managed to rescue all surviving passengers and crew of Andrea Doria in time.”
