About the Volkswagen 1200 Cabriolet Hermueller…  “In 1948 Volkswagen recruited the car body manufacturer Hebmüller, who was based in Wuppertal, to develop a cabriolet version of the classic beetle. The result was a wonderful convertible with an altered rear. Since Hebmüller had never intended to create a four seater, the result was a two seater with two emergency seats, a so-called 2 2 seater. The car%u2019s top ended behind the two front windows und disappeared when opened %u2013 in true roadster style %u2013 into the trunk behind the emergency seat%u2019s backrest. The hood of the car stretched, in comparison to the original beetle%u2019s body, longer and flatter, sloping downwards and yet decorated with a slim steel nose placed on top, which ended in the number plate lighting. By changing the air filter, the mounting of a flatter hood was realizable. The flat and longer rear, the embedded top and the chrome ornamentation allowed the already wonderful convertible to appear graceful. Even those making the decisions in Wolfsburg were rather impressed by the convertible beetle. After the long and strenuous endurance test of the vehicle had shown satisfactory results, VW ordered 2000 vehicles.”
