With the QC issues plaguing the latest Pagaini Batchetta (Purple & Blue) maybe the latest effort from LCD Models can help.  Official photos of their 1:18 Toyota Supra A80 were unveiled today with the results looking quite promising.  Engine detail is well above the average, could this be the best replica of the cult classic to date, possibly?

Definitely will be the best (so far) when it comes out as the ancient Kyosho is a low bar. Will probably be getting a few of these

  2. Mike Wiseman says:

Great looking model. Definitely been waiting for this release. A bit more interested to see what the EVA release will be like but considering that brand has yet to even fully enter the arena that particular effort will probably be years away

    • Mike Wiseman says:

I misread. I thought EVA Models was planning to make this model also, but they are planning to build the Supra A90. So I guess I’ll be add the LCD replica to my collection. Honestly, I would also love someone to make a highly detailed full access supra mk3

    engine details 🥵

  4. Chavez says:

    When is the release date?
    Thanks

  5. Kevin says:

It even has an active front lip. A very rare option on the real car

  6. Vitaliy D says:

Now this is what AutoArt could have been today if they did not select to save on materials, engine details and active suspension!

  7. Tomcatters says:

Dunno, if they want to they can still do it if I look at their latest Skyline releases. It’s the more expensive supercars which lack detail

    • Mike Wiseman says:

I think some the of the composites releases like the skyline r34 and then the recent NSX-R (NA2) have such good detail only because they already had the tooling and design for the engine detailing and interior from their original release and from the NSX Type R (NA2). I wouldn’t actually give Autoart credit for trying on these releases. They really had no choice but to at least match the effort of those replicas

      • Mike Wiseman says:

        * I meant to say the from the original NSX Type R (NA1)

      • Wes says:

not 100% sure about the NSX (although I do have 4 of the new ones), but the R34 has completely new tooling, no parts are carried over. Engine is much more accurate now

      • Tomcatters says:

If you put the old Diecasts and New Compos side by side you’ll notice the have nothing in common. On first glance one might think so, but the R34 is a lot more accurate and detailed than even the latest Diecast AA R34s. The NSX is obviously a bit harter to compare because of different versions, but they also don’t share any tooling from what can be seen.

The LFA for example looks pretty much identical except for the rear grills.

        • Mike Wiseman says:

I was talking about engine compartment and interior parts… I hard to believe they didn’t use any of the old parts for engine components or some of the interior. Also the NSX wouldn’t be that hard to compare because it’s virtually the same engine. Therefore that’s why I said AA had at least match the details of not surpass them

  8. Kostas says:

Is there any information on the release date?

  9. TgrClw says:

Stupid question – is this the turbo version or non-turbo? How can I tell? I love the 90s trio of RX7, 300zx and Supra but never did any meaningful research into Supras.

    • Mike Wiseman says:

It’s quite a bit blurry but comparing it to pictures of the real engine, I believe the top of the engine says “two-way twin turbo”

    • AJ says:

only the Supra Turbo has that massive wing, the non-turbo has no wing

  10. Mike Wiseman says:

Just a FYI to anyone who cares. BBR is finally starting to release the 1:18 diecast Maserati Mc20. The only one that has become available is the black model I believe

    • Steven Weiner says:

Do you mean that the new BBR diecast Maserati MC20 is metal with full-opening features as opposed to their previously released sealed resin models of that? I sure hope so!

      • Mike Wiseman says:

Yea, BBR has a metal full opening Maserati mc20. Amazingly detailed interior. Been available for pre-order on bbrmodelstore since around 3rd quarter of last year. I have the grey metallic model with black/orange orange interior pre-ordered

        • Porsche993 says:

Imagine if they get their heads out of where the sun doesn’t shine and makes a proper 1:18 Ferrari 288 GTO with all the bells and whistles!

  11. Jelle says:

I would like to order one, just not sure about which colour yet. Would they be have limited availabilty, or no hurry required?

  12. WIL says:

Does anyone know if the wheels come off similar to the 1/18 WELL Lexus LFA?

  13. Vitaliy D says:

I’d finally received my example in black color from China.
It arrived with the rear wing unfixed from one side and with the battery broken off from the engine. Frankly, I’m not sure who to blame: it might be bad Quality Control or it might be loaders throwing the packages.
Anyway, a some glue, love and patience have helped to fix these issues.

So, LCD 1:18 Toyota Supra A80. A very detailed and accurate model. Exactly as I said before, it is what AutoArt might have been today if they did not decide to go the composite way. The body shape, shut lines, painting, details – everything is very good.

The interior is very good. This is the first time I see the seats made from hard plastic that somehow create an impression of soft realistic material. I don’t know how they achieved that, but these seats look really good, this is something I always miss in AutoArt’s models where the seats from hard plastic look exactly as hard plastic, unless AutoArt uses some special rugged surface. And, to answer my own and your question: no, the seats are neither movable nor foldable. That might be a good addition – but no, the seats are purely static.

The engine details are so good. This is the level of details that 15 years ago I was expecting all the model cars would have today. What is strange in the Supra A80 model, though, is that despite all the wires and cables in its engine, the battery does not have cables to be connected to the engine. I inspected a few photos and videos of the model with regards to that – and and haven’t noticed battery cables on any of the examples.

The bottom of the model, the suspension, the exhaust system are also so detailed, guys. What is strange here, though, is that all the detailed suspension is static – it is not workable. Which, again, reminds us AutoArt.

To sum up, I’d mark this model as a next step in LCD Models’ growth – in my opinion, it is more solid and refined than their McLaren 600 LT was.

Finally, a few words about the price. I was able to get for 160 euro after the taxes. And I am just a single person, not a large company that gets additional discounts for large batches. So now you know that when your distributor asks 1.5 – 2 times more, he is just a greedy ass.

    • DS Team says:

Thank you for the insight. Where LCD improves AUTOart has taken a passive step back. The quote below speaks volumes, as this model was exceptional on both detail and value. We have immediate team member actioning a full review of the Supra, hopefully it will be shared sooner than later!

” in my opinion, it is more solid and refined than their McLaren 600 LT was.”

    • Vitaliy D says:

A few words about the black color of the model. Initially I was sure it is a “standard” glossy black used in a lot of models (e.g. by AutoArt and CMC). Then, at some moment, I’ve noticed that under certain light (e.g. under a flashlight) there are tiny blue and violet bits clearly visible in the depths of the black color. A very interesting effect. Anyway, this glossy black perfectly keeps your fingerprints similarly to the “standard” one :)

One more thing worth mentioning: in the bottom of the model, in the front, the bottom cover near the front wheels is removable. It is supported by 4 small magnets. Once removed, more engine details are visible from below.

    • Vitaliy D says:

      > So now you know that when your distributor asks 1.5 – 2 times more, he is just a greedy ass.

And now these models are available for only 324 on modelissimo. Distributed by Minichamps, I suppose. You already know what I think about this :)
