Announced back in January 2023, CMC is finally showing fans their 1:18 metal and full opening Ferrari 250 GTO 1963 London Motor show Ron Fry edition replica. We’re not sure what the differences in this versus the original from back in 2015 – see review here. But if having a high-end scale model of the classic Ferrari 250 GTO this one in Red deserves a second look!
Product# M-256
Differences are RHD, scuderia shields and more blue color on interior trim.
Besides, I think it is exactly the same as first release.
there’s no rear view mirror fo some reason, even though there is in LHD version…
250 GTO’s are all different and got changes during their lifetime, or even just during some event, like a specific race or exhibition.
Ron Fry was a garage owner from Bath UK, back in the 1960s I often watched him racing at Castle Coombe circuit, having sold this GTO that he had raced in 1963 & 64 until he took delivery of his 250 LM. He was a member of the Fry’s chocolate family.
Mostly right. Ron was NOT a member of the Fry’s chocolate family. I knew him in Bath and saw him through his succession of cars, Aston Martin GT4, Ferrari 250 GT, 250 GTO , 250LM and two Ford GT40s.
Looking great, as usual, but they haven’t fixed the nose and the angle of the headlights…
Thanks for pointing out the angle of the headlights. Now I finally see what is wrong with the nose, after reading so many complaints from others that “the nose is not correct”.
Beats me why they didn’t change it this round, with all the attention to detail on each individual model.
Also the headlights inside the covers should be slightly more to the front, I think, and the indicator lights should be slightly higher.
Why they didn’t change the nose? Because this is a re-release and the tooling to create the main body casting is the most expensive part. The shape of the nose is not “wrong”, it is exactly as 3809GT looked prior to its 2016 restoration, but it was not a factory nose, as this specific car was crashed and fixed/partially restored more than once. CMC thinks the nose is just fine, they will not spend a ton of money to make a bunch of pedantic collectors shut up for a moment, before they start complaining about something else anyway. No diecast is absolutely perfect, especially those made from 1800+ parts, most of which are metal. Even the overpriced 250 GTO resin bricks from BBR and Amalgam don’t have perfect shapes, and they don’t even have the excuse that they scanning a garage repaired car, like CMC did.
Apart from the differences noted above of more blue in the interior, the lack of the rearview mirror and the right-hand drive, I see that the side gills disappear behind the windows. Although I would settle for the chrome to be of higher quality. I have had several CMC Gto models and all the exhaust pipes have rusted.
