ACME unveils the first images of their upcoming 1:18 metal and opening Shelby GT500KR! The Black on Black with chrome accent bits does look the part. This model is scheduled to arrive in Q2 2024. The suggested retail is under $140 US.
About the Shelby GT500KR… “Famed American automotive designer, racing driver and entrepreneur Carroll Shelby partnered with Ford to build Mustang-based performance cars. The result of their collaboration was the Shelby GT350 in 1965. By 1968, the car had evolved to the GT500 and would see the first convertible built in the series. This ’68 Shelby GT500 is also the more limited KR, which stood for “King of the Road”, including a decked out 428 cubic inch Cobra Jet V8.”

HUGE FAIL! Acme refuses to create a new tire mold that accurately represents a properly proportioned tire for these vehicles. You will never see a Shelby GT500 with sidewalls that tall. Nor will you see a real 1968 GT500 where the tires are tucked under the fenders like they are in the Acme models.
With all the time and expense spent in the development of the bodies and interiors of these models, you’d think someone in the planning QC stages would speak up and recommend that they NOT use the same scale wheels and tires they’ve been using forever. When Acme touts “New tooling,” it unfortunately never seems to extend to the tires and wheels.
Yeah the tires are tall. i don<t know id the wheel covers make them seem even taller but i have the 68 Coupe with the mag wheels and the tires don't seem as bad…
Now knowing this the value doesn’t seem that great!
In this case the “new tooling” only refers to the convertible part of the car. The rest of the model comes from a rather old Lane Exact Detail-mold that is still being used by ACME unchanged in coupe-form as well. Nevertheless, in times of sometimes mediocre 200+ USD sealed resin-models I don’t think 140 USD (or 112 USD as an ACME-Tom’s Garage-member) is such a bad deal for this.
Yes, still a lot of value here. Though what would it cost to re-work the correct wheels/rubber?
