About the Bugatti Type 57G ‘Tank’ – 1937 Le Mans Winner…  “The 57G was launched in 1936 featuring fully enclosed bodywork that prompted the ‘tank’ nickname, a title first given to the Type 32. The newer car however featured much more elegant lines creating a sensation within the racing community.  For the Le Mans 24 hour race of 1937, Bugatti registered two 57Gs. The one car was driven by test drivers Pierre Veyron and Roger Labric, with Jean- Pierre Wimille and Robert Benoist in the other. After only a short while Wimille took the lead and ultimately won the race claiming the first victory at Le Mans for Bugatti with an average speed of 137 km/h – 84 mph.”
