REVIEW: MotorHelix Alfa Romeo Giulia GTA

Words by Karsten Weiss | Photos by DiecastSociety.com

Alfa Romeo is one of the oldest car brands, even older than Bentley, with a long racing and performance history that includes the origins of the Scuderia Ferrari. They celebrated their 110th anniversary in 2020 and celebrated it with two sporty editions of their Giulia, this GTA and the even more hardcore GTAm, both commemorating successful Alfa race cars in the 1960s and 70s and limited to 500 vehicles in real life. Motorhelix´s limited edition triples that number and is just plain gorgeous.

Like the original sports saloon, this comes in the three colours of the Italian tricolour flag, metallic green, white or this metallic red. The paint is smooth and consistent throughout. The GTA is abundant with carbon fibre, not least because of the Sauber Engineering aero kit: Nose, Roof, Italian-flag-striped mirrors, wheel-arches, side-skirts, rear spoiler and diffuser have excellent glossy carbon weave at BBR level. All the mesh, not only the front grille kidney and front air intakes, but nostrils on the hood and underneath the clover symbol too, even the extremely small ones on the rear diffuser are all perforated, not plastic plates.

The replicas of the 20” telephone dial rims reveal excellently detailed brakes and have fine logos at the center. Tire branding, all too often absent from even more expensive models, has not been forgotten either.

I am usually hard to impress with models´ underbodies, but this here is impressive. The engine´s bottom plate comes extra and magnetically clicks into place. From the top too, the replication of the engine bay is an absolute delight. Rising on struts and fine hinges, this Ferrari-derived 560hp V6 bi-turbo engine model is anything but shallow, so that for the collector to be able and admire it, the engine cover that all too often blocks too much of the view, comes separately to be attached magnetically. And as if that did not allow enough of an insight, Motorhelix provides the buyer with a second engine in a display case, again with a magnetic extra engine cover and a workshop engine crane from whose chains the collector may suspend this engine to admire it 360 degrees.

The interior, too, is awe-inspiring. The cabin is not only fully carpeted but has extra floor mats in the footwells. For this red GTA, you get the red option of the stitching on the door panels, dashboard, center armrest and seats, red cloth seat belts, chrome trim and carbon fibre patterns on the back of the front seats and various trim parts such as the door release housing and centre console. Mind the extremely fine buttons and symbols on them. But really makes my jaw drop is what seems to be real metal shift paddles with + and – embossed. Wow!

With quality issues on models on the rise, I would like to remark that the model is flawless, not least of all because quality control seems to be strict. All too often we get mass-manufactured certificates and QC passes carelessly flipped into the box. From Motorhelix you get a hand-numbered certificate and on the flip side of the round cardboard Alfa logo a QC Pass filled in by hand! Other additions are an opening tool and a brochure booklet with information on the real car. It is not a replica of the original car´s brochure but mixes pictures of the real car and the model. I usually don´t pay much attention to packaging and other than the extraordinary length that suggests a stretch limo inside, but is needed for the extras, one detail is remarkable: The box says Giulia GTA and Giulia GTAm which means Motorhelix will definitely release the GTAm version later for you to upgrade from the Solido placeholder budget model.

Although the original does not get the same hype as some supercars, I am deeply impressed with this model and the extras by Motorhelix. This is BBR level on par with our 2020 Model of the Year Award Winner BBR LaFerrari and I whole-heartedly nominate it as one of the best models this year for our next Awards.

Let us add to this lovely review and exceptional model. Our example was a purchase for $249US, which included shipping. A truly superior value and all-around BEST model the team has seen in years…

The MotorHelix Alfa Romeo Guilia GTA is truly going to make most of the mainstream manufacturers take a close look. This model represents the level of refinement we saw from AUTOart in their glory days, something that the team has moved away from…

Our only gripe or word on caution, the rear truck is secured similar to how AUTOart once shipped their model, a metal, plastic-coded wire that was extremely difficult to remove. As per the supply photos, you can clearly see some remnants left behind.

    Last word, BUY THIS MODEL!

  2. Jelle says:

Thank you for the review, it really looks fantastic! The only reason why I was less enthusiastic initially is because of the asymmety in the carbon weave. But now pulling out my Solido I think I’ll upgrade!

  3. SPhilli911 says:

Thanks for the review. Wow, this model has to be one of the most highly detailed and impressive models I’ve seen in recent times. The fact that it’s such high quality AND includes the second engine with a stand for the price is setting the bar so high for other brands. Hats off to Motorhelix!

  4. Wes says:

Great model yeah. Like others have mentioned, only gripe is the lack of carbon weave alignment. I saw it on the sample and was hoping they’d correct it on the final product. Oh well, I still like the model so much, I bought both colours

    • Karsten says:

      Both? There are three !

    • DS Team says:

It’s quite amazing what triggers each collector a negative. Two comments thus far on the CF alignment.

      • Karsten says:

Yet, everyone on a German forum that features three separate threads on this model agrees that this is the best Giulia yet, even over BBR. Some go as far as selling their BBR to replace it with this. Some are planning to get all three colours. Univocally, everyone is totally blown away by it, including both a Guilia owner and someone whose theme this is not at all. I call that sweeping the board!

        • DS Team says:

Owning, the BBR, the MotorHelix excels over it! And it’s much cheaper!

          • George Adams says:

I have the three colours available on this superb Motorhelix model . It is far superior to the BBR and offers far better value. I used to purchase my BBR models direct from the BBR model store. However since Brexit I am charged an extra £85.00 in customs .on top of the price of the model and shipping cost !

        • Jelle says:

I agree, and I’ve yet to come across the first model car that is 100.00 % perfect. Just a bit worried that it may become too popular with limited availability!

  5. Diecast Fans says:

We want more Motorhelix’s product review

    • DS Team says:

If they continue with more examples outside Japanese or tuner, it surely will happen.

On a side note, we’ll gladly accept review for Japanese cars, please contact us for details.

  6. Andrei M says:

THIS is what this hobby needs not all the £250+ resin sealed that’s realising today

  7. Peter says:

On par with BBR LaFerrari? This is better! And that’s before we discuss pricing…

  8. Eric says:

Considering the price here in China is only $200US, the model really is a true value and model-of-the-year to me. Also as a Giulia QV owner, I find the engine bay really stunning.
One little flaw is that the paddle shifter turns with the steering wheel, which in real car it doesn’t. I have given feedback directly to MH and they said they will correct this error in the coming batches.

Anyway, if you are looking for a Giulia model, forget about the resin BBR and definitely get this one!

    • Karsten says:

Thanks for this honest input. It´s true for the GTA, too, the paddles should not be rotating with the steering wheel

but unfortunately do on mine too. For at least the unlucky owners of this first batch this is disappointing and more of an issue IMO than CF alignment.

I doubt, though, that it will or can be corrected for the GTA: Mine is #756/1499, a number just at half the entire limited production. That being one of the first delivered here in Europe, it means production including this error is now either very near its end or has already ended. It would be naive to believe that they´d halt everything for the remaining production of anything in between an estimated 200-0. At best this feedback is in time to make changes for the GTAm. But make no mistake, costs will be evaluated and either there will me no changes and the error kept or prices for the GTAm increased with the excuse of raised costs for this change.

Actually, this is now spoiling my joy quite a bit!

      • DS Team says:

“Actually, this is now spoiling my joy quite a bit!”

Again, as noted earlier. It’s quite astounding what drives a positive or negative experience with each model.

  9. Richard says:

Just took delivery of this model. My only issue with the front wheels. They are a little wobbly. That’s it! Otherwise outstanding. Definitely a candidate for Model of the Year in the US$250 category. Actually, with the exception of CMC, I don’t see any other models beating what Motorhelix has provided with this one. To reiterate the DS TEAM’s last words, “BUY THIS MODEL”.

    • DS Team says:

Yes, we heard about some production models more challenging than others. MH just contacted us, we’ll definitely bring this to their attention. Th

This model is already on the short list for DSMOTY!
