REVIEW: GT Spirit Toyota Supra GR by Advan Black

Toyota GR Supra is a gem of engineering in its own right, with its rear-wheel-drive layout combined with an inline-six-cylinder turbocharged engine. So what does the collaboration between Toyota and Advan Black add to the equation? Well, it creates a striking artistry of a bad boy racer. This is a testament to car enthusiasts and tuners to create something different – something wilder, something racier! GT Spirit has stepped up to replicate all this from reality into the popular 1:18th scale replica, and I will be reviewing this model for you today.

This GT Spirit Toyota Supra GR by Advan Black (product # GT889) comes packaged in a see-through display presentation box – their new standard. A lot of manufacturers are choosing to package this way as it allows collectors to take a peek at the model inside. If you deliver a nice shiny product, this can translate into possible extra sales. For people who do not display their models right away, they can still take a look at the model without actually removing it from the box. And for those who store models away in between other boxes, it will still enable them to see what is inside.

This Toyota is mounted to a black plastic base with the use of four screws that secure it from moving around. I am not the biggest fan of the current screws GT Spirit uses, as they can very easily strip – I prefer old screws they used with their old packaging. I hope they change to a screw that has a deeper and larger screw bit design. Collectors who display models mounted to the base can rejoice, as the black frame panels can easily be removed, giving the model an unobstructed view.

Paint finish is definitely GT Spirit’s strong point, and this model is no exception. It is smooth and glossy, giving the model a premium feel – it is amazing how a great paint job can elevate our love and excitement for the model. Decal application on all areas, including the hood, doors and the spoiler, is again clean and smooth. Whether they are small, medium or large decals, there are no problems here!

This being a resin model with a closed body shell, door shut lines are not a problem – grooves are clearly defined and consistent throughout. Windows fit well all around the model, and I do appreciate the inclusion of rear window defogger lines on the rear window. Yokohama horizontal banners are present on top of both front and back windows – this is an absolute giveaway of what tires this car should be wearing. Speaking of tires, unfortunately, GT Spirit did not brand them – I think it would have been nice to see the branding and size. We see this executed by some brands already – maybe GT Spirit can follow this trend as it adds to the overall package.

Rims, on the other hand, are flawless – painted white with black Advan Racing branding, bolts accented in grey and a valve stem is present and finished in black. The calipers do not disappoint either – painted in red with white branding. Discs are truly amazing too – they show rotational wear, and I would say they look absolutely spectacular!

At the front, this model has perforated grilles, and they look sharp. They are perforated exactly where they should be, and solid where they should be solid, just as they appear on the real car. The real car came with some fake vents, and this model emulates this correctly! One item I would like to point out is that the front diffuser on the real car is made from carbon fibre, whereas on the model here it is just painted black. The Toyota emblem looks tidy and sharp, and the headlights are on point too.

At the back, this model does not disappoint – in fact, it excels. Just take a look at those exhaust tips! They look absolutely awesome with the blue outer outline! Toyota Supra scripts look premium, and so does the Toyota badge. Rear lights are very satisfactory and are true to the original. The rear spoiler is absolutely massive, as it is on the real car with the right number of circular openings. One thing that is missing is the carbon fibre – it is painted gloss back instead. If you are able to overlook that, the overall package looks appetizing.

Take a peek through the windows, and you are greeted with a predominantly black interior with some colour located on the two-tone steering wheel. I do like the red and black combination as it adds some much-needed colour. There is a carbon decal on the middle console around the gear lever area and on the lower part of the dashboard, too. Buttons have a splash of white, adding to the interior ambience. Racing bucket seats include attractively replicated fabric racing seatbelts, much appreciated. Overall, I think GT Spirit did well on the interior.

To summarize, GT Spirit has done another good model. Overall shape, paint execution, wheels, rotors and brake calipers are all the strong points. On the other hand, the replacement of carbon fibre with glossy black paint will have some collectors asking for a little more. If you can overlook that, I think this is another fantastic model from a brand that keeps on giving us unique model cars. There seems to be something interesting coming out from GT Spirit every month, and if you want to stay successful in this hobby, you need to offer variety, stay relevant, and offer a good price point for your product. GT Spirit does that very well!

Lovely review, Luk! The Advan livery wraps the lines of the Toyota Supra GR well… GTS does an excellent job on the wheels, as usual, they are striking. We can see many tuner fans adding this piece to their collection!
