When I think of a green car, I think British…and a green Mini is like the icing on the cake for me. Mini Cooper John Cooper Works (JCW) 60th Anniversary Edition makes it even more interesting as it is a special tribute to the Cooper family and their collaboration with Mini. This Anniversary Edition is finished in a very cool Rebel Green paint with some white accents on the roof, mirror caps, door handles, and headlight rings making it a very good-looking spec. Another addition is the iconic number 74 on both doors and hood, which pays homage to Mini Copper’s first-class win in the 1961 Lombank Trophy. This limited edition 60th Anniversary Mini is quite exclusive with only 740 real cars produced, and exclusivity adds some prestige and collectivity to any automobile. OttOmobile decided to replicate this exact model in 1:18 scale.
When OttOmobile announces its new models every month, I get excited to see what interesting models they will produce next. It seems as if they know how to reach for my wallet every month as they seem to end up in my display cabinet.
This model comes packaged in their usual white cardboard style box with the model secured inside in styrofoam casing. The front side of the box has the usual photo of the model making it easier to identify which model the box belongs to. Inside, they included a small piece of white soft cloth which is something new for the brand. I am not sure if this will be included on models moving forward or if this is a one-off. Either way, this one came with it included.
Green metallic paint is applied evenly on the resin body shell, with white roof, mirror caps and door handle accents leaving the same impression. Number 74 on both doors and the front hood is gently faded in and does not scream at you, which I really like. I think OttOmobile did a good job recreating it on the model as it mirrors the original.
In the usual fashion, OttOmobile has done well with all shut lines giving them just the right amount of depth. They are clearly defined with no paint seeping into the groves. Mini, Cooper, and John Cooper markings are right in place, however, I did not receive any extra decals inside the box this time. A white soft cloth was included instead – I personally prefer extra badging just in case I ever need to replace one.
Side windows fit well all around the model and I think with years of experience this has been significantly improved from their first launched models back in the day. Window defogger is present as is the rear window wiper – true to the original. A black roof antenna contrasts well with an all-white roof. Cooper badging on both sides of the front fenders and behind the rear windows completes the look.
Moving to the interior, it is mostly black and is indeed true to the original. I do like the addition of silver on the sides of both seats and looking at pictures of the real car online this proves to be accurate. I am however disappointed not to see any seatbelts on the model even though seatbelt clip-ins are replicated. Maybe this is part of cost-cutting to keep the prices of their models in check.
There is a splash of silver on some interior components. Gauge and round info-center clusters are recreated, and a decal is applied. This indicates that the car could be in the on position. I think OttOmobile could have gone a step further and replicated red light bars that run across the passenger side of the cluster. Overall, the interior finish is acceptable for a budget resin model, but some additional detail would enhance the overall look.
At the front, the Mini badge is accurately blacked out. A red line runs across the front, and a European license plate breaks up a rather large black grille. I do like the selection of the “MINI 60 YEARS EDITION” license plate as it confirms this is indeed a special edition model. A hood scoop does have texture and shows depth but is not perforated. John Cooper Works badge is included and everything else looks well-proportioned and right in place.
At the back, this model looks just as complete. Taillights are true to the original with the British flag design visible through the red lens covers. All emblems look satisfactory and window defogger lines look sharp. Twin exhaust tips have a nice shine and show good depth. The license plate follows the same theme as the one at the front.
Moving onto the rims and tires – the rims are finished accurately in silver and black paint, with the center caps proudly showing the JCW logo. Tires have a tread pattern, however, there is no size or manufacturer branding present. The rotors look nice and fresh and do not need any servicing. Red brake calipers add some more colour and I have to applaud OttOmobile for painting a silver valve stem on the black inner side of the rim wall. Wheels do not steer, and this seems to be the in-line with other resin model manufacturers.
Overall, I think this is another great OttOmobile budget model. The subject matter certainly appeals to me, and I think this model will be welcomed by many. OttOmobile continues to impress with the overall shape capture and limited production runs making their models a frequent sellout. Keep them coming!
Hey Luk, thanks for another review on the budget concise side! Another great, unique piece from OttOmobile. The 60th-anniversary livery is epic!
I just wanted to point out that the color is not Rebel Green which in reality is solid dark green.
