An insider source tells DiecastSociety.com that the latest batch of the recently released “Stainless Steel” finished DeLorean DMC-12’s will most likely be the last produced in diecast metal! This would make the ultimate collector item!! It seems the finishing process was more challenging than originally anticipated by the AUTOart team. About 80% of the intended models were scrapped, as they did not meet quality control standards imposed by AUTOart and DeLorean. Hence the recently introduce Matt black DMC-12.
This model wasn’t even on the radar, sources say. Some of the rejected pieces will find themselves re-purposed as painted units, the first being the Matt Black. More should be on the way pending approval from DeLorean. Read more on the AUTOart DeLorean DMC-12 manufacturing process here.
Folks you heard it here first, the Stainless Steal AUTOart DeLorean DMC-12 will become an instant classic with collectors, glad I pre-ordered one!
So does this mean there will not be any more diecast models at all, or just more deloreans but in plastic. I really hope this does not mean all future autoarts are going to be ABS Plastic
No, just the DeLorean DMC-12.
QC control…..autoart have it? Are you kidding me?
Basic QC is inevitable, otherwise you would end up with a model missing wheels. But in this case AUTOart set the bar too high for themselves. Which baffles me actually because Sun Star did a good job with their version and if they had only covered it with an extra layer of clear lacquer, we wouldn’t need a 300 dollar version.
Calm down, folks. AUTOart have announced a 1985 Aston Martin Vantage in diecast, which is yet to come. So the DeLorean isn´t the last AUTOart diecast model to be produced (even though it would be an appropriate car for a diecast farewell). And only because of RUMOURS of teething problems with the DeLorean, let´s not contribute to spreading panic through this website. The combination of the DeLorean being declared the “last AUTOart diecast” and its alleged rarety because of production problems would only give retailers a pretext for asking insane prices (cf. the Elite LaFerrari).
So keep calm and carry on collecting!
Let me clarify once again, this is not the last AUTOart diecast, they will not produce the DeLorean DMC-12 in diecast with the stainless steel finish in diecast. Keep clam and carry on!
I hope that the black Deloreans are still a sure thing at least
I would think so, hopefully DeLorean won’t pull the plug.
So basically what you say is that AUTOart only brings one batch of the stainless steel version of DMC…just like they do with most of their models, since only a few models are being reproduced over time?
Yes it is common for a manufacturer to define a batch or production run. In this case 5000 units were commissioned only 1000 or 20% made the cut. Simple economics the model is not at all profitable at this low success rate. To recoup some losses the scrap will be issued in coloured limited edition. However if this model is would go into production again it will be completed in the new composite material.
** THE FOLLOWING STATEMENT WAS ISSUED BY TORONTO MOTORSPORTS TODAY **
“Due to the complexity of the hand finished brushed stainless steel effect on the new 1:18 scale Delorean, AutoArt has cancelled the remainder of their intended production. Less than 1,000 of the diecast metal models will ever see the light of day and needless to say, these models are in extremely short supply. As of now, Toronto Motorsports will not be charging a premium for the models we have remaining in inventory, but we expect the market to skyrocket once the news is circulated. We have been told that the markets that are still expecting delivery, WILL NOT RECEIVE ANY, period!”
“Skyrocket” – Brilliant, exactly as predicted! Even worse… we won´t get any in Europe!
And honestly, the black version never existed, so I would not buy them. Time to pick a Sunset.
After finding out about this, I just ordered a silver Delorean last night. I just knew that it was now or never. Now I sure hope the Black Deloreans will be produced a lot more. I was initially planning to get both one at a time. But this unfortunate news, forced me to speed up my ordering of a silver one. Now I look forward to the black ones as well and hope they are just as great if not better than the silver ones
I just noticed the AUTOart website has no listings under the Delorean category anymore. Nothing comes up by keywording the model number either.
Just picked up my stainless (AA calls it “satin”) DeLorean. What a beautiful model! This is going to stay out in a case!
