The Delorean Time Machine that Never Was…

Back in the day when Hot Wheels Elite was a mainstream name in scale modelling the name on occasion would release a “Super” Elite version of certain models.  We’re not sure if the Super Elite term was fact from manufacture or one from collectors, nonetheless, the model provided even more detail and eye delight for those who wanted a little bit more.

Fast forward to today, and we discover two models that were destined for the same Super Elite status but were stopped short of full production due to extremely high production costs.  The models in questions are the Back to the Future Delorean Time Machine and Knight Rider.  Along with the basic elements of opening doors, hood and rolling wheels the scale model of the Delorean Time Machine was to include exterior light up features: headlights, taillights, flux bands, and chassis.  Interior light up features included time circuits, plutonium gauges, speedometer, ceiling array, spectrum analyzer, flux capacitor
interactive play with lights and sounds.

We could just imagine how cool the Knight Rider car would be!  If we get access to the video of the car showing off all these bells and whistles we’ll post it here.

Super Elite was the official name of that range. It’s a shame they didn’t release that DeLorean in Super Elite, it looks like a beauty.

There is a video of this on utube showing it working. There were also interchangable parts so ot could look like any of the 3 movies

What a shame these cars weren’t produced. Great presentation by the designer too. HWE is missed dearly by the model car community.

In the days of £500 CMC models selling like hot cakes, what on earth made them think this awesome Delorean wouldn’t sell?

Actually some of the deloreans and knight riders have been manufactured and are getting listed on ebay from China. I was skeptical, but I did purchase both and they are the real deal. Right now you can get the Delorean at around $200 on eBay. Just search for elite time machine and looked for the picture of the lite up car. Do not put super or it will not show up. The only downside to them is that the accessories are not available. Including the rail and 1950 wheels, the 1950 time circuit hood box and the nuclear chamber. However did does have the mr fusion and flip to hover wheels. It does light up and have all sounds. As for Kitt, it is perfect with a rechargeable battery display stand, talks, all sound EFX and theme. Also from china, but I have not seen any available for a few weeks. Just look for super elite knight rider in the completed listings. I will post videos of each sometime after the holiday.
