2018 Model Of The Year, WE NEED YOUR INPUT!

The days are shorter, the leaves have changed colour, the winds of cold are blowing…  Winter is around the corner, and this is a good indication another year has almost come to an end.  To heat things up, we want you, the scale model community to help us define the candidate list for DiecastSociety.com 2018 Model Of The Year.

2018 to date is definitely no banner year in our opinion, but there have been some bright spots along the way.  Sealed and resin models are the new norm, but opening, diecast metal with 360-access is still alive and kicking!  We want you to help define these gems.  As we championed in the past this award is not about the most expensive model or even the most detailed.  This hobby is about passion, so what moved you this year?  Share with us your 2018 Model Of The Year.  Use the comment field below to add your candidate to the list.  Please include BRANDMODEL and SCALE.  Thank you all in advance for participating!

  1. Rafa says:

    1/18 Talbot-Lago T150 C-SS Coupé Aérodynamique ‘Goutte d’Eau’ Figoni & Falaschi from CMC

  2. Stephane Demers says:

Well so many to choose from… BUT one that was awaited by many : the GT Spirit Dodge Challenger Demon in 1:18th scale.

  3. Vitaliy D says:

Maybe Almost Real will release their wonderful Mercedes-AMG GT R in 1:18 this year?
If not, then maybe BBR’s Ferrari F12 TDF can be a candidate?

  4. JP86 says:

    Just to name a few:
-Almost real Range rover series 1
    -BBR Ferrari F12 TDF
-Almost real Land Rover Defender Camel Trophy
    -Paudi Infiniti Q60s

  5. Nero says:

I just have bought this at an offer on carmodel and I can say certainly is the winner of 2018 by far..

Almost real Range rover series 1..

Maybe de Camel defender too, but is not released yet.. and it´s complicated buy in Europe before than 2019..

  6. Atalante says:

    BBR Ferrari F12 TDF
    CMC Ferrari D50
    Autoart Koenigsegg One:1
    Ilario Bugatti 57 Atalante
    CMR Porsche Singer Targa

    • DS Team says:

A lot of goodness here! Thanks for sharing.

    • Nero says:

Not agree about the BBR F12TDF.. great model indeed… but “The best of 2018” can´t have dog legs at that price..

For me, some requirement are need..
Die-Cast, All openable parts, no dog-legs, nice gaps between parts, paint job, details, price..

      • Atalante says:

        Not agree with your statement…
It should be listed in the MOTY race and let the collectors decide.

      • Karsten says:

I disagree with the disagreement, not because I have reviewed the white model favourably, but because dogleg – hinges on ONE of the lids (or any other less-than-perfect-feature) are not a reason to exclude a model from being given the chance to be voted for. Concerning the dogleg hinges I refer you to the excellent arguments in the comments for the review of the red F12 tdf. The other rather self-evident reason for non-exclusion is that the model seems incredibly popular when you look at how often it has already been entered here now. The DS “Model of the Year” title has never been guided by requirements so far and people could vote for whatever model for whatever reason.
I have to admit that this sometimes leads to funny results. For example, an excellently made model of a vehicle of remote niche interest (e.g. CMC´s canvas trucks) will never be crowned and lose against a half-as-well-made model of a popular hypercar. You only need to look at some comments about Almost Real only making “trucks”, so the excellent Range Rover deservedly entered by quite some does sadly, but foreseeably not stand a chance against the BBR F12 tdf.
Maybe there should be categories to have a fairer contest; GT cars don´t race formula 1 cars either. And there could be a complex system where voters can award points for the degree in which the model meets certain criteria (like a Dougscore for models). That would make voting more complex than a one-click-business, but it would coeerce voters to consider each model fairly and be more objective. Until then, see it as what it is so far, no more than a popularity fun activity/title.

        • DS Team says:

Yes, our goal ins’t to over complicate the award. This isn’t a perfect science by any stretch of the imagination. I truly like our basic system as it doesn’t always mean the most detailed or the most expense wins, hence the results from a few years back when Bburago took the crown.

          • Nero says:

Then I vote for the F12 TDF 1:24 Bburago made, not the same detail, but is a cool model, same doglegs, but just 15-20€ not 300€..

We are talking about the Best, not the model you like most, as I´m a Ferrari collector I could choose any Looksmart or BBR sealed Ferrari… but I think that´s not the point we are looking for.

Still on my arguments, If you accept dog-legs in a 300€ car, the brands will increase the price and down the detail.. nonsense pay for that amount for a Minichamps..

You could change the question, What is your FAVORITE model of 2018?

MY VOTE IS FOR AMR DEFENDER CAMEL TROPHY, I only saw in pics, but going to buy asap..

        • NERO says:

2018 Model Of The Year… for me means The best, not your Favorite..

Im pretty happy with some of my 1:64 2018 additions.. but choose the best model of the year..

It will be interesting two questions… Best model, and Favorite model…

          • Atalante says:

The best model does not have to be perfect (i.e. can have incorrect wire wheels, slight mistakes and even dog legs) as long as it is the best model overall for a majority of collectors. Price could be factor for some but not so much for others. Since this is pretty subjective this is why we have to select some potential candidates and then proceed to the vote.

  7. HY90 says:

BBR Ferrari F12 Tdf or the AutoArt Koenigsegg One:1

  8. Andrew says:

BBR 1:18 scale Ferrari Monza SP-1

  9. Angelo says:

    The long-awaited
    Ferrari 365 GT4 2+2, 1:18
    and
    Ferrari 365 GTC/4, 1:18
    Finally both by KK Scale

  10. Vitaliy D says:

I guess we are having a strong candidate for the _last_ place… and it is AutoArt Koenigsegg One:1! Basing on gaps between its openable parts, overall outright plastic in exterior and interior, low engine details, non-workable suspension, lack of perforated grills under the top-back side of the hood, the presense of driver’s mirror opposite to the blind back of the car’s inside (lol) … I could continue this list.

  11. Tommay says:

    Hi

For me the following are strong contenders:

Otto mobile – Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio – 1/18
    BBR – Ferrari F12 TDF – 1/18

    Cheers
    Tom

  12. Emanuele Masneri says:

Land rover defender 110 camel trophy almost real 1:18

  13. Wim Spierings says:

    Relaunch
    Minichamps
    McLaren Honda MP4-4
    Senna 1988
    Scale 1:12

  14. P930 says:

Unfortunately, passion for a model sometimes is hard on the wallet. My favorites of the year:
    1/18 CMC Talbot-Lago C-SS Coupe
1/18 CMC Lancia D-50 Grand Prix
and if it is released by year end as promised, I am excited about the release of the:
    1/18 Replicarz Vanwall Grand Prix

  15. George K says:

Does the new CMC 1/18 Jag C-Type qualify? It may have some flaws on the accuracy side, but as far as being a hand-built model, using noble materials it seems hard to beat. I would say the same for the CMC 1/18 Talbot Lagos- some flaws in absolute accuracy, but built like a Swiis watch. The both have great presence, and do not come anywhere near being “toy-like” in their appearance. They represent the “artistic” elements of this hobby well.

    • Atalante says:

I think the Jag C-Type qualifies since the first BRG no-livery version is available. Would be better to see the different variations released so that collectors can see them first hand before voting.

  16. TomMay says:

For me, the Highlights are the

1/18 Otto mobile Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio
    1/18 BBR Ferrari F12 TDF

  17. Miguel Oliveira says:

I would choose Camel Trophy from Almost Real

  18. Karsten says:

It is interesting to see the entries on what they are guided by: Most people simply express their love or hate for some of this year´s models, either guided by how much they were (un)impressed with built-quality or guided by their field of interest or collection theme (happily ignoring models of vehicles they are just not interested in). All of that is legitimate, but it´s a funny mix of criteria in a “one man, one vote” process, when it comes to casting a vote. See my above reply for more detail.

  19. Douglas Morales says:

Please, add an Ignition Model, its resin, but very exact

  20. RYO says:

How come no one is voting for Almost Real G500 4×4??? I also own the controversial BBR F12 TDF, but it is not nearly as good.

  21. Marcelo says:

For me the mandatory candidates are:
    CMC Ferrari D50 1/18 CMC
    Ferrari F12 TdF 1/18 BBR
    Koenigsegg One 1/18 Autoart

  22. jose says:

    1/18 CMC Ferrari d50

  23. jguzman says:

    CMC Ferrari D50 1/18
    CMC Talbot-Lago C-SS Coupe 1/18

  24. SAID says:

RANGE ROVER VELAR 1/18 FROM EBBRO-LCD (BROWN)

  25. claudio says:

1:18 land Rover Defender Almost Real

  26. spikyone says:

Claudio, most of those were not released in 2018. And you only need to make one post!

  27. Lausambaychua says:

For me, it’s these 3 candidates, all from Almost Real:
    1. Mercedes-Benz G500 4×42 – 1:18 scale.
    2. Land Rover Defender 200Tdi/300Tdi Camel Trophy – 1:18 scale.
    3. Range Rover Classic – 1:18 scale.

  28. George says:

I would say alfa romeo giulia quadrifoglio ottomobile cause it has a great value for money

  29. rewire says:

    cmc ferrari/lancia d 50
    almost real RANGE ROVER

  30. Pablo Pozo says:

    Triple 9 Toyota Land Cruiser 1967 FJ40 1:18
Schuco VW t3 westfalia camper 1:18

  31. poblano says:

Not applicable, but once Bertone Alfa Romeo Carabo and Canguro are produced in 1/18 scale (by AUTOArt I hope, with opening body parts), I shall vote for one of them.

  32. Mr.Impreza says:

For me, the Kyosho Samurai line has been my 2018 highlight. The best model from them for me was:
    Kyosho Samurai 1:18 Nissan Fairlady Z Z 32

  33. claudio says:

Aston martin Vanquish 1:18 Autoart volcano red

  34. Porsche993 says:

I’d have to vote Minichamps’ 991.2 GT3. I think it’s a very well-engineered model inspite of its flaws (solid grills). Some may think it’s just a modified 991.1, but the inclusion of a manual transmission on the gulf blue model with multi-colored wheels was pretty surprising. I assume we will see Touring editions as well, as it just needs retooling of the engine lid. It is currently my favorite mid-range model.

  35. Roger Lodge says:

Of course the Schuco- VW Beetle Kafter Motorhome (in Yellow).

    • Lausambaychua says:

Hmph, very interesting choice. Nice to see a Schuco on the list once in a while, and a very unique Beetle variant instead. But still, if I have to choose between a Schuco Volkswagen Beetle/Transporter and Almost Real’s releases this year, I’d go with Almost Real.
Not that I hate the Beetle/Transporter, I’m obsessed with them. In fact, if I can, I’d collect all possible variants, which is quite an impossible thing to do, especially with the Transporter.

  36. fredam says:

    CMC Ferrari D50 1/18 CMC
    Ferrari F12 TdF 1/18 BBR

  37. Tomcatters says:

I gotta say that I really liked the Admiral Blue Corvette C7 Grand Sport by AutoArt in 1:18. The paintjob is absolutely beautiful. Very thin and nice metallic flakes. The tires also look very neat with the lttering and details engraved. Price is also very reasonable, as you can pick them for as “cheap” as 150€.

  38. a1modelcars says:

My model of the year is MERCEDES-MAYBACH S-CLASS Almost Real 1:18

  39. carfou says:

Apart from some of the already mentioned, this year I totally adored the following:

    – Norev 1/18, Mercedes Benz 450 SEL 6.9 (W116)
    – Autoart 1/18, Porsche 911 (991) GT3 RS
    – Otto 1/18, Renault 18 Turbo Break (knowing that this one does’t stand a chance though)

  40. Zack says:

I guess the CMC Talbot-Lago came out in 2017 so it doesn’t qualify? If that’s the case, then…
    1. Schuco’s VW T3. So much detail packed into something that isn’t a Ferrari; almost the opposite of one, so I respect them for sticking to diecast and keeping it fully-opening. I’ve got the three-row green/beige version, and it just pops.
    2. I’m going to throw Greenlight some love and say their ’77 Monacos and ’75 Furies. They’re not technically amazing like a CMC, but GL went and molded, in diecast, a car that most deride as junk today. (I’ve got a ’72 Coronet- same basic body- so I’m kind of biased.) But they listened to the market clamoring for this fleet special from the mid-late ’70s and they delivered.
    3. I’m not sure what they’ve come out with specifically in 2018, so I’d like to nominate Best Of Show as the whole company. I know they’re resin and sealed, but they’ve made so many great 1/18s that, let’s be honest, would never have made it into our scale as diecasts. A 1972 Vista Cruiser? A 1957 Imperial? A ’62 Chrysler wagon? BoS continually surprises and delights me with their choices, and I hope they’re in business for a very, very long time. Nothing against, say, Autoart or Minichamps, but how many Mercedes G-wagons do we need? How many Lamborghinis or McLarens? I can’t deny their craftsmanship, but they leave me cold. BoS goes into the niche makes and body styles that I have to give them respect for. Heck, they made a metallic lavender Studebaker! :D
