Amalgam 1:8 Ferrari 156 F1 ‘Sharknose’, Phil Hill #2

Another beauty comes from the Amalgam team, welcome their version of 1:8 Ferrari 156 F1 ‘Sharknose’, Phil Hill version.  Full access and layers of details are evident here.  All this detail does come at a price, just under $18,000US.  Price includes a luxury black presentation box that is mounted on carbon fibre or leather base protected by a clear acrylic dust cover.

About the Ferrari 156 F1 “The evocative Ferrari 156 F1 Sharknose, so-called due to its unusual front air vents, was Ferrari’s first Formula One machine with the engine positioned behind the driver. The result of a brief given by Ferrari to new Technical Director, Carlo Chiti with the clear instruction to create a car capable of winning the Formula One World Championship for the Scuderia under new, downsized 1.5-litre engine regulations, the Sharknose did not disappoint. The 156 boasted a simple and clever design, with a tubular chassis dressed in aluminum panels. A new lightweight 120-degree V6 engine was developed for the new rules, with the resulting angle of the cylinder blocks providing a lower centre of gravity.  So successful was the little Sharknose that it won the first five out of seven races in the Championship, including a 1-2-3-4 finish at Spa. With a driver pairing of Phil Hill and Wolfgang von Tripp, the latter of whom tragically lost his life at the Monza race, the Sharknose delivered the Constructors’ Championship to the Scuderia. Hill also won the Drivers’ Championship in the same year. The 156 continued to be used for two more seasons scoring single wins in 1963 and 1964 respectively.”

Nice, but glad I spent $400 years ago to get a 1/18 Exoto. Same amount of detail, just smaller and cheaper!

    • HOTWEELS164 says:

Same here. That Exoto model is an absolute masterpiece !

    • MRM says:

Actually I would disagree with that statement, as the Exoto model is actually MORE detailed. From what I see on the pictures, the CMC model is also better detailed. For that kind of money, one can get the CMC transporter and load it with two CMCs and one Exoto, have another Exoto to display alongside, buy all the necessary figures and materials and make a diorama to die for. Even at the current insane prices on evilbay.
But then again, I don’t think that Amalgam is concerned at all what diecast collectors think about it, as the model is targeting a completely different market.

    By the way…
“The evocative Ferrari 156 F1 Sharknose, so-called due to its unusual front air vents, was Ferrari’s first Formula One machine with the engine positioned behind the driver.”
This is not true. Ferrari’s only win for the 1960 season, was with the rear engined 246P. The Sharknose was introduced in 1961.
“The 156 continued to be used for two more seasons scoring single wins in 1963 and 1964 respectively.”
This is also not true. And confusing. The 156 “Sharknose” was introduced in ’61 and used the following season in 1962. In ’63 Ferrari raced with the 156 F1-63, which had semi-monocoque, direct fuel injection, magnesium wheels and had no resemblance with the sharknose. in ’63 Ferrari won the championships with the 158, which had a V8 and a full monocoque chassis. In the second half of the season they even went to a flat 12 cylinder engine, which would eventually give the beginnings of the Ferrari boxer engines, which powered cars from the Scuderia into the ’80.
