Amalgam Ferrari F1-90 (641/2) – Mexico GP Mansell / Race Weathered

Love them or not, the team at Amalgam have released a beauty in 1:8 scale, this is the classic Ferrari F1-90 (641/2) – Mexico GP, driver Nigel Mansell in a race weathered edition.  We love the results but think it should be somewhat more weathered.  Considered one of the all-time F1 beauties, and we agree, the example will set you back north of $10,000 US.

Always loved this racecar. I’m still sorry I didn’t grab the Exoto 1:18 in naked carbon I once got the chance to get, for 150€, without box a few years ago on ebay. I remember in my high school years I wanted to build the scale model by Tamiya, but never got around to actually do it. This car gave Ferrari a real chance to win the 1st F1 championship since the last one in 1979. Realiability issues, Mansell not being a very good team mate to Prost, and that one unresolved matter between Prost and Senna, and Ferrari had to wait another 10 years to finally secure that championship. It took so long it felt like the team was cursed and would never win a championship again …much like nowdays after 2007.
That said. very special car in Ferrari history, in my opinion. But don’t tell me this is another sealed model though. At 10000$ they should at least be able to reach the same level of detail the old Exoto has, otherwise this is a joke, of the not funny variety.

10000$ is a whole lot of money. However, this Amalgam model is of the 1:8 scale, not 1:18. Precision and exclusivity have a price, I guess. But craftmanship too.

There is a very interesting and short video on Youtube that shows a bit about the “weathering process” of their models.

      I enjoyed it very much.

I’m well aware one is a 1:8 high price small run model, while the other is a 1:18 high run smaller price model. But for that very reason it seems to me to be quite laughable that Exoto can put so much more detail in a much smaller and much cheaper model while exclusive ultra luxury model car maker Amalgam struggles to give his customers a sealed model in 1:8 for 10000$. One can buy some very decent real cars both new and used for that sum …and they don’t come in sealed format either.

Recently i’ve been at TAJ Boys Toys in Brazil, to see their collection. Honestly i was disappointed! In many models i noticed lack of care, misshapen, glue prints and i high sense of plastic material. Maybe 1:8 is too big anf fuzzy for this hobby. 1:18 is the perfect scale to combine shape and small detail. Althought you can compare the MP4/4 between Amalgam and GP Replicas at 1:18 scale. We are talking about 3x more expensive in a model with no more efforts. I think they brand was well based on marketing for ultra exclusive entusiasts. Its not about quality. Its just about hiw much money you can show you have!
