Just too bad that the nr.4 car isn’t an exact replica. It misses the side vents of the original. I wrote to CMC for an explanation, but never received a response.

What do you mean by “misses the side vents of the original.”

  3. Branko Bisseling says:

The real nr.4 car has openings in the front side panels, like the famous 300 SL Gullwing. On this model CMC didn’t include them and is actually just copying the body of the nr.3 car and putting other tampings on it. The nr.3 car doesn’t have these side openings in real life.

You can have a look of the original car in the Mercedes-Benz museum using the link https://www.mercedes-benz.com/en/mercedes-benz/classic/museum/mercedes-benz-300-sl-2/ .

Oh…that’s a shame making the same mistake for twice!

  5. Branko Bisseling says:

Thanks for that picture. So what happened later on with the side vents, is still a mystery to me. However I can imagine Mercedes used the nr.4 car to experiment by adding cooling vents, which were later used for the Gullwing of 1954.

  6. modelcar.hk says:

I believe there is no side vent from the beginning to the end, do you find any actual 1952 Carrera Panamericana picture with a vent on #4?

  7. Branko Bisseling says:

Well, look at the link I send. I have seen the real nr.4 car in the Mercedes-Benz museum in Stuttgart with side vents. So, unless this real car is a (not accurate) replica of the Panamericana nr.4 car, there really does exists a nr.4 car with side vents in the end.

However I do agree that on the older pictures this nr.4 car doesn’t have any vents (the pictures speak for themselves), but I am still puzzled what happened after that. I might have to write to Mercedes-Benz asking for an explanation.
