First Look: TOP Marques Lancia Stratos Rally

Well, another Lancia Stratos in rally form is coming to scale.  This time around the team to step to the plate is TOP Marques.  Initial images show their grey-wear, sealed and resin example in 1:18 scale.  No word yet on the complete livery list or release date at this time.

One collector asked the question, why would we need another Lancia Stratos in scale?  Their response Because we want to make the best Stratos ever made- and its our objective to do that.  Is this just a bunch of smoke and mirrors or are they capable of evaluating their game?  Here’s our take on the resin and sealed piece form Kyosho and Ignition model on the HEADLINER banner from back in 2017 – REVIEW HERE

My question is, why can’t someone make a really nice street version without the huge lights at the front ruining the beautiful wedge shape?

I believe Kyosho made a couple opening street versions. One with the rear spoiler, and one without.

There was also a special wide-wheel version. A gent over at DiecastXchange has one. However, those are predictably SUPER rare and the asking prices are predictably absurd.

Sun Star makes a nice one. The jury is out on the shape. Seems off in certain angles, spot on in others. Engine detail is lackluster but there’s a ton of depth that can be enhanced with some paint. The interior is arguably better than the Kyosho, but build quality and panel fit are bad. Not as bad as Kyosho at their worst, mind you, but that’s a low bar to clear.

I believe earlier SunStar ones had much better panel gaps. They’re reissuing them a lot, so the molds are very tired now.
One of the signs of older ones are ugly plastic thick antenna. Small details like these are nailed better nowadays.

I had both Kyosho and SunStar, and honestly I just had too many questions for Kyosho version. The blinkers are just orange paint on the body, the engine detail is not too much different from SunStar, cockpit was even worse i think, but the overall QC issues were just too much, bits of model were falling apart, and the plastic front/rear body panels had some brown cracks. The model spent most of its life in the package and in the glass shelf in the room free from direct sunlight or smoke. None of my other models have this kind of damage.

Sunstar provides so much versions of Stratos, so in this case I can live perfectly with SunStar.

Another manufacturer who has the roof shape wrong – it’s too narrow at the front. This causes the tops of the doors where they meet the tops of the A pillars to bend inwards too much. For example, It’s the same as with the ancient Solido effort which can be had for around €40.
