PHOTO GALLERY: GT Spirit Porsche 911 (964) Turbo S

We’ve all faced this dilemma at some point: should I expand my collection to include 1:12 scale models? I took the plunge a few years ago, with one of my first purchases being a discontinued Kyosho Ferrari F40 in classic Red. That was just the beginning—soon, a few more pieces followed.

However, I quickly realized that display space comes at a premium, especially when you’re committed to showcasing your entire collection. For me, that’s a non-negotiable; all 728 pieces (and counting) are proudly on display for my enjoyment. Yes, it’s a quintessential first-world problem, but it led me to an important decision: I chose to sell my 1:12 models and focus exclusively on 1:18 scale.

Recently, however, GT Spirit sent me a 1:12 resin, sealed Porsche 911 (964) Turbo S in a stunning Amethyst Metallic finish. Let me tell you, this model absolutely shines in person! It hails from one of my favourite eras of Porsche design, with the iconic 964 and 930 platforms leading the way. More thoughts on the 964 below.

The Porsche 964, produced between 1989 and 1994, marked a significant evolution of the 911. It retained the classic design while incorporating modern advancements, serving as a bridge between the original air-cooled models and more contemporary 911s. Notably, it introduced standard ABS, power steering, and, later, airbags. It was also the first 911 platform to feature an all-wheel-drive system with the Carrera 4 (C4), drawing inspiration from the Porsche 959. Aerodynamically, the 964 brought smoother bumpers and a retractable rear spoiler, subtly modernizing the iconic silhouette.

The 964 Turbo initially debuted with a 3.3L flat-six engine, refined from its predecessor, the 930 Turbo, delivering 320 hp. In 1993, Porsche introduced the Turbo 3.6, featuring a new 3.6L engine producing 360 hp, significantly enhancing performance.

At the top of the 964 hierarchy was the Turbo S, produced between 1992 and 1994. Limited to only 86 units, it was a masterpiece of Porsche Exclusive, designed for enthusiasts seeking a lightweight, high-performance variant. The Turbo S was powered by a 3.3L flat-six engine, tuned to 381 hp, paired with a five-speed manual transmission. Extensive weight-saving measures included thinner glass, reduced sound insulation, and lightweight materials like aluminum and carbon fibre. Aerodynamically, the Turbo S featured a fixed rear wing, side air intakes, and an optional “Flat Nose” design inspired by the 935 race car. With a 0-60 mph time of just 4.0 seconds and a top speed exceeding 180 mph, it was a technological marvel for its time.

The 964 platform holds a special place in Porsche’s history, blending air-cooled nostalgia with innovation. The Turbo S remains one of the most exclusive and collectible 911s ever made, a testament to Porsche’s dedication to engineering excellence.

The model itself is nothing short of stunning! GT Spirit truly works its magic with the paintwork and wheels. The Porsche 911 (964) Turbo S is beautifully represented, capturing the essence of the original car. The cup wheels, a must-have for me, are skillfully rendered, and the accompanying rotors and calipers hold their own, adding to the authenticity.

That said, don’t expect perforated finishes on the intakes, front, side, or rear wing—they’re not present. However, let me emphasize that this in no way detracts from the model’s overall exterior appeal. It’s a strong and solid effort that stands out regardless!

Inside, the interior is thoughtfully detailed with flocking and fabric seatbelts, adding a touch of realism. The Blue accents on the seatbelts and the rear “Turbo S” logo provide a delightful pop of colour. Even the seat inlets feature retro hues that add a dash of character.

All in all, this model delivers a fantastic effort at a reasonable price point, ranging from $299 to $349 USD – if you’re lucky enough to find one! Enjoy the pics!

I love it. This model was a must have for me, even if only to be part of a small collection of 1/12 models. Absolutely stunning model in person, the Amethyst Metallic color really pops.

There were photos of a planned similar-looking RUF by Almost Real in 1:18 and with an interesting aubergine color.

I even remember we were mentioning the aubergine color in the comment here, in Diecast Society, but I could not find the related topic to reference it here.
