The Honda Civic Type R (EK9), introduced in 1997, was the first Civic to bear the “Type R” badge, signifying Honda’s high-performance lineage. Built exclusively for the Japanese domestic market, the EK9 was based on the sixth-generation Civic hatchback and featured a lightweight body, enhanced chassis rigidity, and a seam-welded monocoque structure for improved handling. At its heart was the B16B 1.6-litre DOHC VTEC engine, producing 185 horsepower and revving up to a screaming 8,400 rpm—an impressive figure for a naturally aspirated engine of its displacement. Mated to a close-ratio 5-speed manual transmission and equipped with a helical limited-slip differential, the EK9 delivered a pure, engaging driving experience that quickly earned it cult status among enthusiasts.

Beyond the engine and performance upgrades, the EK9 Civic Type R was stripped down and focused on function over frills. It featured Recaro bucket seats, a Momo steering wheel, red interior accents, and minimal sound deadening to keep weight down. The suspension was reworked with stiffer springs and dampers, and the braking system was upgraded for track-ready stopping power. With its nimble handling, razor-sharp steering, and high-revving character, the EK9 became a benchmark for front-wheel-drive performance cars and laid the foundation for future Type R models. It remains a highly sought-after classic, especially as more units become eligible for import to markets like the U.S. under the 25-year rule.

As for the model, the execution is classic MotorHelix—truly inspiring! It delivers all the essentials you’d expect from a premium diecast: solid metal construction, functional openings, and a few thoughtful extras. Included in the box are a scale and a hoist—nice touches on their own—but the real standout is even cooler. MotorHelix has encased the engine cover rim and seat in a clear resin display block, creating a unique collector’s piece.  Unfortunately, the photo of this feature was accidentally deleted—our bad! But trust us, it’s impressive.

MotorHelix consistently goes above and beyond, offering what we believe is the best bang for your buck, backed by a compelling value proposition. Once they expand into more manufacturer brands, they’ll be a force to be reckoned with. Enjoy the pics!

Thanks for the review that proves that MotorHelix continues to make great models! That this one resonates with DS audience so little is probably due to subject matter. I am not into Asian hot hatches too much either, but will happily add anything European they care to make.

It was the last sample in the box, and we promised to highlight each. Each a true joy to view and photograph. We can’t wait to see what’s coming!

This reminds me of a time when the C3 Corvette was getting really long in the tooth, around 1978-79 and we still had to wait a bit for the next gen. While the design surprizingly finally held up better than anyone expected, people got tired of the design for years to come. But nowadays, these cars are sort of making a comeback as a nice original example will get noticed in a positive way. So who knows, maybe we’ll be able to appreciate this generation of Civic a little more in 10-15 years?
