REVIEW: AUTOart Porsche 911 Carrera RS 2.7 (REVISED)

The original Porsche 911 Carrera RS 2.7, nicknamed the “Ducktail” for obvious reasons, is an absolute classic that needs no introduction. So much of a classic it is that even toy manufacturer Playmobil has made it in addition to other classics like the Mercedes Gullwing, Ferrari 308 GTS, VW Bug, VW Van, Classic Mini, and Citroen 2CV. And of course, it has been made in 1:18 before by many manufacturers, including AUTOart themselves. However, the collector community have been complaining about various inaccuracies, so that the definitive model did not exist … until now.

A German forum member favourably compared the first colour option of the new AUTOart to the old one. So it is only fair to pay due credit to Christian, a Carrera RS enthusiast, to whose insights this review is deeply indebted. He comes to the conclusion that the new one is better in every respect. While he already had the old AUTOart (in white with green accents) and the Minichamps (in white with blue accents) (which is why he chose it in white with red accents now), for me the new AUTOart is the first rendition to enter my collection, and I went for white with green accents to join my modification of a Norev into the 992 GT3 RS Pebble Beach show car that paid tribute to this very version of the classic for its 50th anniversary.

Improvements start with the general shape of the model, which previously posed a major complaint amongst collectors. Everything seems to be, quite literally and aptly, more rounded on the new model. So this is no milking-the-mould, but starting-from-scratch. Other improvements like greater depth of the lights, even more detail on the engine and underbody exhaust system, wheels with tire branding and valves could just have been slapped onto the old mould.

The biggest improvement is to be found under the hood. No, not the rear engine, the front end: While the old model had carpeting instead of a spare wheel and other details, the new one is the first to have the spare and a detailed fuel tank and is delivered with an extra, molded-into-shape carpet that you may or may not fit into the frunk. This being the lightweight version, it is credible for the model not to get it fitted.

You recognize it to be the more hardcore and rarer Lightweight–only 200 were ever built-and not the more creature-comfort-oriented Touring version with the bucket seats. But instead of five visible gauges on the dashboard, the clock on the very right would have to be blinded to resemble the fully stripped Lightweight.

In other words, there is hardly a definitive, ultimate model, but this is extremely close. If you haven´t already got a model of this classic in your collection, there are only two reasons for you to hesitate: #1 Minichamps will make another one soon, will have a hard time beating AUTOart this time, but yet might. #2 You find it hard to pick a colour. If the latter, a hint may help: Not all of AUTOart’s options are historically correct; the green, the blue and the yellow ones originally only came with black decals and silver rims. The Grand Prix -white ones are historically correct and were most-picked, with the green accents being historically the rarest. Plus, it’s the DiecastSociety.com signature colour. So for me, the one shown here is the perfect choice, especially alongside my GT3 RS Tribute to Carrera RS in the same colours.

Thanks for the review, Karsten. I was hesitant about purchasing one, but I did decide to purchase the Viper Green exterior. This is one model from back in the day when AUTOart and Minichamps were battling it out. A rare win for Minichamps. A model I still have to this day.

Have any others decided to follow suit? Or is AUTOart composite still holding you back?

Katsten, FYI, that link to review does not work.

      • Karsten says:

The link works fine for me.

Likely, you are logged in as a member.

Using a different device, not logged-in works too for me. Sorry, no clue why it´s not working for you. On modelcarforum. de you needn ´t be a member to view reviews. Otherwise I wouldn ´t have put the link.

I’m getting “Forbidden. You don’t have permission to access this resource” when following that link. Maybe it does not allow access outside of Germany?

Funny, it was working this morning!

I have lost access to modelcarforum.de more than a year ago. I am located in Canada and tried everything, from different devices, PC/Mac/iOS, various browsers, VPN connected to German server. Absolutely NOTHING works. Highly likely that we are blocked for safety reasons. Sad!

I got the yellow one and my only gripe is that in real life it’s a lighter color than in the pictures. The model is really good and it’s hard to hold anything against Aa these days with their current quality. Paint rash is out of question, if plastic bodies don’t develop their own issues over time… I might be tempted to add more.

These are very good! I mean, both the review and the model!
If the upcoming 930 Turbo 3.0 will be as detailed as this one (including the frunk details, and don’t forget the Turbo 3.0 has more engine details both under the hood and under the bottom), then I’ll have to add another composite model to my collection.

  3. Sean says:

Fantastic, thank you for the review! This is a great looking model. Had they made it in white with blue accents I would have grabbed one, too.

  4. Greg says:

I very look forward to re-realeased awesome black 911 “Blackbird” by AA

  5. Aaron says:

Now if only Autoart could do the following cars in fully opening 1/18, that would be sweet:

    Aston Martin Valkyrie Hypercar
    Aston Martin Valkyrie AMR Pro
    Aston Martin Valhalla
(All preferably in green with yellow trim)

    BMW M Hybrid V8

    Cadillac V-Series.R

  6. Motor muse says:

The original RS is my favourite Porsche since NFS Porsche Unleashed and in every racing game it has appeared in.

Sadly I won’t be adding one as they only brought colour options that are banned from my collection. I was really hoping that the orange or black would be included. But guess not.

  7. R-Radovan says:

I have bought 2.7 RS from Minichamps many years ago (white-green). Now I added also this new relase from AUTOart (white-red). Still like them both but that new one is so great! Can´t wait to see new version of 930 Turbo.

…also I would love to see re-release of 944 because I didn´t buy it back then and still do regret it :D

  8. Greg says:

The only Porsche most people (incl. me) really wait is 911 (993) turbo

  9. Sean says:

I am not sure I would phrase it like that. The 993 Turbo is highly requested from Porsche fans in opening model form, sure, but it is certainly not the ONLY one.
