Minichamps New Releases – Week 20

Not a whole lot from Minichamps this week, though there is one model raising an eyebrow or two.  This would be the feature, the 1:18 Porsche 917/20 ‘Pink Pig’ Livery, drivers Kaushen and Joest – 24H Le Mans 1971.  In addition to the classic livery, the model features classic elements like diecast metal with open bits.

The Pink Pig is very likely the reissue of #P711823 from late 90’s to early 2000’s; got mine in 2002. List price was something like $129 and it came in a special black clam shell box with a sound effects chip.

    Wow!
Minichamps should call this 917/20 the “Pink Cow” since they’re really milking it! I had the original (first) release, purchased on sale for $90. When the secondary market got completely stupid, I let mine go for something like $279. I did regret selling it, but waddayagonnado?

When minichamps re-released it a year or so later in clean & dirty versions, (albeit without the cool, sound effect box) they pulled down the values on the original. I ended up buying another MIB/NOS first release car with the sound box for less than $150., and am thrilled to have it back!

So minichamps is bringing it back yet again? One thing is for sure, if they hadn’t completely wrecked the secondary market with the last two versions, this should do the trick.

We’re always in favour of bringing back classics. This one is a great example. There is always new fans of scale model collection getting into the hobby. Gives them a chance to own one. What we dislike from Minichamps is rehashing the old in completely static examples or semi-static.

So if we follow your logic, people like me who couldn’t afford or find it back then, should never be able to buy it, because the model “flippers” will lose money,?! Or worse pay inflated price, so someone can benefit on my back? You’re no different than the car “flippers” and hoarders in real life pal. That’s why it’s called collecting to collect and not run business out of it, here’s some advice stop collecting, cos you ain’t a collector.

As long as the model goes, I think it’s the best one, simply because it has active parts. Way better than a sealed brick for hundreds of euros.
